Judge rules police liable for death of British aristocrat Alexander Monson

A British aristocrat who died in a Kenyan jail was killed at the hands of police, a judge has ruled.

Alexander Monson died in 2012, aged 28, in a jail cell in the Kenyan resort of Diani.

Police officers said he died from a drug overdose, but his family has maintained he was beaten to death.

Mombasa magistrate Richard Odenyo ruled four officers should be charged in connection with his death, having dismissed the police narrative about the events.

Mr Odenyo said: "His death was not natural, neither was it due to drugs. His life was cut short by the police and therefore, the director of public prosecution should prosecute the officers mentioned."

He added the four officers, named as Naftali Chege, John Pamba, Charles Munyiri and Ismael Pamba, had contradicted each other during the inquest.

They will be arrested and charged with murder.

In a tweet, Mr Monson's father Lord Nicholas Manson said: "Verdict on my son Alexander's death in Kenya 6 years ago: his killing was unlawful; 4 police are recommended for prosecution. Jubilation."
