US defence secretary James Mattis: Two Texas military bases will be used to house migrants

US defence secretary James Mattis has confirmed two Texas military bases will be used to hold migrants.

Fort Bliss and Goodfellow air force base will house people who have been detained while attempting to cross the border from Mexico.

"We'll provide whatever support the department of homeland security needs in order to house the people that they have under their custody," Mr Mattis said.

"We'll work that out week by week, the numbers obviously are dynamic. So we'll have to stay flexible in our logistic support for the department of homeland security."

The decision comes following weeks of outrage over families being separated and unaccompanied children detained in tough conditions at the southern border.

President Donald Trump abandoned the policy last week. But the administration will continue to detain families together, a development that has been widely condemned.

He provoked further outrage on Monday by calling on Twitter for migrants to be detained without judicial process.

The US military revealed last week that it had been asked by the government to prepare to house up to 20,000 migrant children.

It has stressed that it is providing logistical support to the department of homeland security, which handles immigration issues, rather than participating in any decision making.

Mr Mattis has previously said that the department of defence would provide the land but operations will be run by other agencies.

One official said unaccompanied children who were detained crossing the US border would be held at one of the facilities, while another would house families of migrant detainees.

The head of US customs and border protection, Kevin McAleenan, said on Monday that he has temporarily stopped referring adults for criminal prosecution when they cross the border illegally with children.
